BASF breaks ground on green hydrogen, fuel cell components plant in Germany
Author: Chemical Week by S&P Global
BASF SE said its environmental catalyst and metal solutions division has started constructing its first production facility for green hydrogen and fuel cell components at Budenheim, Germany. The opening of the site is planned for the summer of 2025, it said. Financial details have not been disclosed. Low-iridium-loaded catalyst coated membranes, a key functional part for proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis, will be among the solutions produced, it said. BASF’s Celtec membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for high-temperature fuel cells will also be produced at the facility. MEAs are critical components in fuel cells that enable hydrogen, along with oxygen, to be converted into electricity. The project is being developed with Trigona Fuel Cell Components GmbH and Grundstücksverwaltung Rheinufer GmbH, it said.
