Briefing #2:  Clean Hydrogen in Transport

‘Transport’ is not a single sector, but one which includes many segments (and sub-segments) with very different utilisation and solution requirements. Though currently dominated by fossil fuel, in many of these segments the future competition to hydrogen as an energy store will be battery. Of course, both provide a route to drivetrain electrification; indeed, hybrids of the two are already being deployed in some applications.

The diversity of transport may also be reflected in different clean fuel choices for different applications: hydrogen directly, or those into which hydrogen is an essential feedstock (such as ammonia, methanol or ‘e-fuels’). And of course any transport utilisation will require the development of fuelling infrastructures and supply chains.

Relevant topics include:

  • Heavy road transport, including trucks and buses

  • Hydrogen fuelling infrastructure deployment

  • Light road vehicles: will applications such as taxi & commercial fleets provide a market?

  • Specialised heavy equipment, such as mining trucks, excavators and refuse collectors

  •   Long-distance rail and hybrids

  • Shipping: which fuels for which usage segments?

  • Aviation: which fuels and over which timescales?

This briefing is being delivered as part of our Clean Hydrogen Sector Briefings:

#1.  Clean Hydrogen in Industrial Decarbonisation - Wednesday 13 October

#2.  Clean Hydrogen in Transport - Thursday 14 October

#3.  Clean Hydrogen in Power & Heat - Friday 15 October

These briefings are intended for those seeking an up-to-date, hype-free and independent perspective on the market segments driving demand for hydrogen.

By highlighting recent project examples and announcements from around the world, each briefing will provide attendees with a clear view of activity in each sector and answer the question ‘which applications, companies and geographies are leading the way?’

In addition to reviewing market activity, the briefings will overlay onto this an insightful analysis of what current activities tell us about the evolving demand, deployment and policy trends which will determine future growth trajectories (and/or limits to growth).

If you seek to better understand where hydrogen demand will come from, to grasp new business development and growth opportunities, these briefings are not to be missed!

What Attendees Are Saying

The best part of the training was the level of engagement from the trainer; he was very clear in his explanations and was taking the time to answer all queries from trainees.
— Engineering Project Manager, SBM Offshore
Slides were informative, good delivery from the trainer, and technology worked well. Good idea to space it out over three days as it was less disruptive.
— Managing Director, Low Carbon
