Green Hydrogen From Renewable Power

Session 2 of the Zero to Hydrogen Hero Programme

For clean hydrogen purists, green hydrogen offers the lowest carbon long-term solution to hydrogen production. This training provides a techno-economic look at the pathways to green hydrogen at large scale. It reviews competing electrolysis technologies and their development, before examining some of the key variables and numbers which will determine whether renewable electricity is available in the quantities and at the costs which are often assumed.

In particular this training will consider the competitive environment for renewable power supply, including how the market can look from the other side of the fence: the viewpoint of renewable power developers, investors and producers.

Agenda

Attend live or watch the recordings. Each session includes dedicated Q&A sections throughout.

Examining Electrolysis ( 30 mins )

  • Comparing the different electrolysis technologies

  • Electrolyser inputs and efficiencies

  • The economics of electrolysis: input costs, load factors and output costs

  • Development trends, including size, materials usage and cost reduction

Q&A (10 mins)

Example green hydrogen projects, proposals and players ( 30 mins )

  • The Orkney Isles: a hydrogen economy leader

  • Green hydrogen projects around the North Sea (offshore wind as a resource)

  • Solar + hydrogen projects around the world

  • Common features, timescales and other conclusions

Q&A (10 mins)

Will there be enough renewable electricity? ( 30 mins )

  • Examining the numbers: requirements for scale

  • Is there really ‘surplus’ renewable power (and will there be in future)?

  • Where and why does renewable power curtailment happen?

  • Competition for the electricity resource

Q&A (10 mins)

Examining the economic variables for green hydrogen ( 30 mins )

  • The relationships between capital costs, input costs, utilisation and hydrogen output costs

  • How much will renewable electricity for hydrogen cost?

  • Given conversion inefficiencies, why and when might hydrogen production be an economic use of clean power?

  • Round-trip or one-way ticket? (Renewable power and hydrogen for ‘sector coupling’)

What Attendees Are Saying

Great overview with deep knowledge demonstrated over the course
— CEO, Bioarag
Slides were informative, good delivery from the trainer, and the technology worked well. Good idea to space it out over three days as it was less disruptive.
