Workshop Schedule
The below workshops will take place twice on the date stated, once at 09:00 CET and again at 15:00CET.
22nd March: Clean Hydrogen: the Key Concepts
Terminology is explained and demystified, covering the value chain from production (grey, blue, green or turquoise?) to transport(compression, liquification or conversion?) to end-use (fuel cells or combustion?). The aim is to provide a comprehensible explanation of the core technological features and variables within the hydrogen landscape, one which is immediately accessible and relevant to business-focused people.
Key data and features of the current hydrogen market are also reviewed, future market opportunities segmented and emerging projects and applications highlighted.
23rd March: Green Hydrogen from Renewable Power
For clean hydrogen purists, green hydrogen offers the lowest carbon long-term solution to hydrogen production. This session provides a techno-economic look at the pathways to green hydrogen at large scale. It reviews competing electrolysis technologies and their development, before examining some of the key variables and numbers which will determine whether renewable electricity is available in the quantities and at the costs which are often assumed.
In particular, it will consider the competitive environment for renewable power supply, including how the market can look from the other side of the fence: the viewpoint of renewable power developers, investors and producers.
24th March: Hydrogen New Business Models, Regulation
An invaluable introduction into how hydrogen can be introduced into the current energy system, looking specifically at the substitution of natural gas. What are the emerging business models shaping the hydrogen economy, the role that regulation plays in this development and the changes needed, as well as the role that existing natural gas infrastructure can play in this new economy.
This is an essential deep dive into those wishing to understand how hydrogen could fit into the future energy system and within the business model of their companies. Ideal for those of a non-technical background, seeking to better understand both new business opportunities and risks. Interaction with the speaker and discussion of real-life cases brought by the participants will be a key element of the workshop.
29th March: Hydrogen and the Natural Gas Industry
It’s evident that those whose business currently depends on natural gas, wherever they lie in that value chain, have a particular interest in the development of hydrogen economies. This session examines the players who are active in hydrogen, with particular focus on those from the natural gas value chain and the projects they are promoting and investing into. It describes some of the opportunities and challenges that exist in transitioning from natural gas towards hydrogen blends; or, eventually, 100% hydrogen.
On the upstream (production) side, it will include issues around ‘blue hydrogen’, in particular the status and prospects for carbon capture and storage. Downstream, technical issues of infrastructure and equipment upgrades will be covered, along with business issues of market demand, policy, competition and economics.
30th March: Business Opportunities for the Hydrogen Economy
31st March: Wind & Hydrogen
This course explores the synergies between the production of hydrogen and the existing - and future - use of onshore and offshore wind. Both the onshore and offshore wind industries have grown significantly globally. The offshore wind industry has expanded significantly; for example in the UK in the last 20 years it’s grown to 10 gigawatts now in operation.
Challenges remain however not least connecting these generators to the grid with grid capacity acting as a bottleneck and considerable cost. Hydrogen production could be a more cost-effective way to tap this energy abundance. Ideal for those of a non-technical background, seeking to better understand both new business opportunities and risks, the session aims to be low on PowerPoint and maximise the time for Q&A.
